Trex Challenge

The Social Action Committee has relaunched the Trex Challenge! This green project is a synagogue-wide effort to collect thousands of plastic bags that would otherwise go into landfills and waterways to be turned into sustainable outdoor materials. If we collect more than 500 pounds of plastic bags and plastic film in a six-month span (about 40,500 plastic bags), Trex will donate another(!) high-performance composite bench to our synagogue. It’s a win for us, our environment and for Trex. This will be Kol Ami’s second bench earned.

*Here’s what Trex will accept: produce bags, bread bags, case overwrap (think toilet paper and paper towel rolls), dry cleaning bags, newspaper sleeves, ice bags, wood pellet bags, Ziplock & other re-sealable bags, bubble wrap, salt bags and cereal bags. All materials must be clean, dry and free of food residue. For more details, watch this short video clip: https://www.facebook.com/watch/?v=561238807984438.

Here’s how it works: You can start collecting plastic bags right now and store them at home. (But reuse them if you can.) Once you have collected a few trash bags-worth, drop them off at the main office during regular business hours. 500 pounds is a LOT of plastic, so we encourage every congregant (and friends & family!) to participate. Kol Ami volunteers will weigh and report the collected materials every month before delivering them to one of the participating drop-off retailer locations.

For more information or to volunteer to help, please contact Mark Pinzur or Marlene Dworkin.
