Jewish Labor Ethics in Industrial Agriculture

This session examines the human dimension of our food systems, focusing on the labor conditions of farmers and workers in industrial animal agriculture. Drawing on Jewish texts—from Torah laws on fair treatment and dignity in work to rabbinic reflections on justice and care—participants will explore how these teachings illuminate modern ethical challenges in the food industry. Through text study and discussion, attendees will consider how Jewish values can guide more humane labor practices and inspire ethical choices in communal dining.

Rabbi Melissa Hoffman is Executive Director of the Center for Jewish Food Ethics (or CJFE). Holding rabbinic ordination, an M.A. in Jewish Studies and an M.S. in Animals and Public Policy, she brings a unique blend of Jewish leadership and food systems expertise to community-based education and advocacy. Rabbi Hoffman has published work in the The Progressive, Jewish Telegraphic Agency, The Forward, and the Jewish Journal.

First Thursday programs bring you guest speakers, including congregants and rabbis from around the country, to share their expertise on topics of interest. We will also include several discussions of films with Jewish themes.
