First Thursdays: Shared Journeys, Shared Sounds: Musical Bridges Between Jewish and Black Traditions
Presented by Ira S. Miller, Ph.D.

Join Ira Miller for a journey through the shared musical history of Black and Jewish communities in America. With a combination of photos, recordings, and narrative, Ira reveals how these traditions met, mixed, and shaped some of the most recognized music of the 20th century. Ira holds a PhD in Music Theory and Composition, along with extensive training in musicology and ethnomusicology. He loves discovering the connections between musical cultures and styles and sharing those insights with others.

Please note: Because this program relies heavily on music and multimedia, it will be offered in‑person only to ensure the best experience for attendees.

This program is open to congregants at no charge and $15 per person for non-congregants.

First Thursday programs bring you guest speakers, including congregants and rabbis from around the country, to share their expertise on topics of interest. We will also include several discussions of films with Jewish themes.
